AREA INFORMATION
The Hessian state capital located on the banks of the Rhine River in the middle of the economically important Rhein-Main Region is elegant and beautiful, attractive and lively, and offers an extensive range of fine arts and sports activities. Its 26 hot springs and their therapeutic effects made this site a popular place to settle with the Romans some 2000 years ago. They called this site, which was home to a Roman legion, the “Acquae Mattiacorum” or the Springs of the Mattiaci”, the local German tribe. The dukes of Nassau encouraged the settlement known as “Wisibada” to flourish and the numerous bathhouses and inns ensured a lively and thriving trade in health tourism. Under Prussian rule, Wiesbaden acquired the status of a cosmopolitan spa. Palaces, stately homes, elegant residences and distinguished hotels dominated the cityscape. European nobility came here, as did poets, philosophers and statesmen. Due to the frequent presence of German Emperor Wilhelm II, Wiesbaden soon became an “imperial city”. On this ancient site, the attractions of a modern metropolis are combined with the classical flair of this former cosmopolitan spa.Nearby Frankfurt Airport is also a crucial factor in the positive transformation of this traditional spa resort into an international convention center. An historic venue, modern trade show and exhibition venues and an attractive line-up of conference hotels with a wide range of services are available to the sophisticated business traveler. The Rhine River and wine are inseparably linked with Wiesbaden. Well-known wine and champagne producers are at home here, and the nearby Rheingau Region lives in harmony with this city on the Rhine, which is also known as the Gateway to the Rheingau.
